Kushukuru Gift Project
Confession: I was a little hesitant to raise my hand when Jessica Swift called for makers to be a part of her fabric collection project but certainly not because of the design because, well, just look at these beauties!:
I was hesitant because projects are starting to pile up and the last thing I needed was to add another. But I couldn’t pass up this opportunity. I’m in love with these prints and most importantly, the meaning behind her Kushukuru collection.
Kushukuru means ‘deep gratitude’ in Swahili and with Thanksgiving just around the corner, I am feeling especially thankful this time of the year.
I’ve had this design brewing for some time but it was a challenge to try and translate it to a quilt pattern. Should the rain drops be bigger and placed more randomly? Should they look like diamonds or rectangles? Should there be another cloud in the sky? Should the cloud be shaped differently? I may not know any of the answers right now but cutting into these prints and putting something together sure put me in a happy place!
Though the design is still in its very rough draft stages, I’m so happy I got to try it out using the Kushukuru collection. The prints and the colors were perfect for the special person I’m giving this to. She and I have had our fair share of cloudy days and rainy storms but after years and years apart, we’re finally finding our way back into each other’s lives.
