Nakatomi Block Quiltmas Spectacular
“Welcome to the Quiltmas Spectacular, pal. “ - John McClane
A LOOK BEHIND NAKATOMI
That quote above might be wrong but couldn’t you totally hear it in Bruce Willis’ voice? Anyway, let’s take a look behind this block! I promise this is quick because I gave myself half an hour to write something. December is a beast of a month!
The gift-themed quilt block was inspired by Nakatomi Plaza, the building where John McClane single-handedly saved hostages from Hans Gruber and his henchmen. The block represents the building (the gift box) from the rooftop explosion (the bows) scene!
I rewatched the movie to get me all fired up to create this design though in all honesty, I know more about Die Hard from watching Brooklyn 99 than from watching the movie itself. 🤷🏻♀️ I mean, they even have an episode dedicated to the movie. 11/10 would recommend.
If you’re spring cleaning your scrap bin in the winter time, Nakatomi is GREAT for scraps! In fact, the largest fabric piece required is a fat eighth (9” x 21”) or a 1/4 yard for the background. It actually requires just a teensy bit more than a 1/8 yard so if you have at least a 5” x 42” strip for the background, that’ll work!
As with most XOXSEW patterns, this block is thoughtfully designed for a quick make so if you’re pressed for time, you can whip up one of these bad boys in under 30 minutes or your pizza is free.* Plus, with a finished 12” x 12” block size, you can simply make several more to build a full-size Nakatomi Quilt!
Prefer to follow a pattern? Stay tuned! Like the Griswold quilt pattern from the previous Quiltmas Spectacular, there’s a chance you might be seeing Nakatomi as a full quilt pattern next year, complete with multiple size and [possibly multiple?] design options.
*Sorry, there is no pizza.
