INSIDE THE PATTERN
That’s right — you don’t have to apply bug spray to be surrounded by trees. The #ForestQuilt pattern is another fairly quick, easy-to-follow pattern from XOXSEW. It’s also loaded with six sizes, conciseinstructions, and tons of diagrams. The perfect project for every season and every body.
SAMPLES + FABRIC COLORS
This is one of those uncomplicated patterns where you can pretty much grab your favorite color combination and bam: it works. I normally fiddle with my color swatches for a bit before I land on a color scheme, but with this pattern, very little color planning was involved. Let me show you!
Autumn in Lap Size
I was lucky to receive Suzy Quilts’ signature PURE solids from Art Gallery Fabrics just as it hit the stores. I’m a huge fan of both Suzy and AGF and I was so excited to cut into the new colors. The honeymoon solid is the only fabric I didn’t use in this photo, because I decided to use the gorgeous backing fabric instead. For your convenience, Sewing Arts has the quilt top big throw size kits available!
Winter in Big Throw Size
These minty fresh colors are all Bella solids. I went with grey for the background to represent a wintry sky and pulled a bright white to make the falling snow pop.
It was too big for my husband to hold the corners for some shots. Thankfully, my kids were around to hold the other corner of the quilt. I’m not sure what shenanigans they were up to, but that bird in the background looks unfazed.
Spring in Lap Size
I grabbed a handful of vibrant Speckled fabrics by Rashida Coleman-Hale for Ruby Star Society. It’s a wonderfully large collection, but I narrowed it down to rainbow colors to represent spring. This one was quilted Trace Creek Quilting using the rolling hills stacked panto.
Summer in Baby Size
You know I couldn’t leave out a dark background sample! For this baby size, I used a chunk of colors from my half yard Sugar bundle by Sarah Watts of Ruby Star Society (with some added yardage for the sky). I had just enough leftover backing Speckled fabric from the spring sample to use for the backing on this , too - YAY! This also went out to Trace Creek Quilting, who added some delicious, subtle texture using the chevrons panto.
Out of this World in Baby Size
I love how this one was completely unplanned. I was ready to make a holiday sample, but when I realized the leftover Sugar colors from the previous sample, I HAD to make this one, too (note: I did have to supplement with extra yardage for the sky). If you’re curious, there’s only three more colors from that same Sugar bundle, so that bundle got a lot of mileage — and with plenty of usable scraps to spare! I sent it off to Wild Phil Quilting, using wool batting and a simple panto to match the angles of the forest.
TESTER VERSIONS
The pattern was professionally tech-edited and reviewed many many times, so I asked only a couple of quilty pals to test its user-friendliness. I may have said this before, but I just love it when they send me photos of their quilt top. It’s such a great way to see the pattern through a different lens. Please consider following them on Instagram and checking out their Etsy shop!
Pam of @tgifquilts created a vivid forest and backed it with minky fabric for an ultimate snugglefest. She took it for a stroll along a picturesque creek.
Jessica of @makeitsewquiltco went festive and low-volume for her big throw version! I’m excited to see it quilted and it makes me want to go back to my sewing room and whip up that holiday sample that I didn’t have time to make.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Forest was inspired by trips to the majestic redwood and pine tree forests in California. We have to drive a few hours to see them, but we love hiking through forests whenever we can. We don’t feel the seasons in Los Angeles, so being surrounded by trees helps me feel at peace and really appreciate the seasons of nature. While I had the holidays in mind when I sketched this design, it was important for me to make it suitable for any season. That’s why the design allows the sky to be interpreted as winter snow, fat droplets of rain in spring, or twinkling stars on a clear summer night or crisp autumn eve.
As mentioned, the quilt pattern includes six sizes, three of which use the extended layout (or the square version). This way, you can surround yourself with trees right at home 😉
