INSIDE THE PATTERN
The #PageTurnerQuilt pattern is a nod to books you can’t put down, staying well past your bedtime with zero regrets. But, you don’t have to pull an all-nighter to make this quilt top. It’s thoughtfully designed to keep things simple (so you can get back to your reading).
The pattern also includes tips to make the abridged version (for those who prefer a shorter size), as well as a bonus pillow size, which means there are 10 different quilt sizes packed into these pages. 🎉
SAMPLES + FABRIC COLORS
This is another one of those easy projects where you don’t need to carefully plan your colors in order to make it work. And although this was designed for non-directional fabrics, feel free to ignore that note. Nowadays, I enjoy using whatever I have on hand as much as possible. (Fabric information can be found under the photos of the finished quilts).
Cover in Baby Size
I’ve been itching to pair up a bold red and a rich blue from my fabric stash, so I combined them with their softer counterparts to complete my fabric pull. Art Gallery Fabrics continues to deliver a wide range of colors that are such a treat to my eyes that I went ahead and used the leftovers to make an abridged wall hanging size. :)
This one traveled across the country to hang at QuiltCon. I don’t make quilts with conventions or festivals in mind, so I’m always shocked and grateful when a quilt of mine is selected to be displayed or juried. It was straight line quilted by Trace Creek Quilting and I’m so delighted with how it came out!
Cliffhanger in Wall Hanging Size
I used some of Suzy Quilts’ PURE solids by AGF (leftover from my Forest quilt) to whip up this wall hanging. Pearl cotton size 8 thread + wool batting are my favorite materials to use when quilting by hand. I find that this duo shows off the stitches nicely without pulling too much attention from the design.
Romance in Baby Size
There’s something soft and romantic about mixing up peachy hues. I go back to this color scheme time and time again. I can’t help it. It’s one of my favorite go-tos, and something that I always have in my fabric stash.
Speaking of favorite go-tos, this baby went to Trace Creek Quilting for some longarm treatment using the merge panto design. I’ve been meaning to try this panto and I just love how subtle and complementary it is with this quilt.
Memoir in Pillow Size
I had leftover Sprout wovens courtesy of Fableism from my latest book samples, so I cut them up to make a Page Turner pillow. Pillows are a hot commodity in our home and I think that’s why I like to include them in my patterns as much as possible.
I did some minimal hand quilting, just enough to add extra texture to these already texture-tastic fabrics.
Fantasy in Wall Hanging Size
To showcase a dark background sample, I pulled these fabrics from my stash after watching the Harry Potter movies over the winter break (my kid had just finished reading the series). I had matching DMC threads on hand (yay!), so I ended up using the same quilt design seen in the first wall hanging to keep it simple and straightforward.
Update: I just realized I was probably thinking of Halloween colors than Harry Potter 😂🤷🏻♀️
Picture Book in Abridged Wall Hanging Size
This is the latest print collection from Charley Harper fabrics by Birch Fabrics. I belatedly noticed that I never made a sample using prints, so I thought these End Paper basics, which is slated to release this summer, would be a great way to showcase how low volume prints might look on this pattern.
BEHIND THE SCENES
The upside down book can be seen as a flying book, or the passage of time when you're immersed in a story. From a practical perspective, the upside down book not only enabled me to make use of leftover half square triangle blocks, but also allowed the quilt to be turned upside down without affecting the design.
Page Turner almost debuted as the book-themed installment in the Wonder Years quilt series, but the Story Hour pattern snagged that spot! So with the Modern Landscape Quilts book nearing publication, I figured it was a great time to dive back into the design and finish writing it. It felt like a proper way to end the chapter of my book-writing journey.
