Eastern Sierra Quilt Pattern

We’re back on the road for the last leg of the Golden State series journey with the Eastern Sierra quilt pattern now available here!

We first sailed to Balboa Island with equilateral triangles, hiked up to Mammoth Lakes with sewing curves, then drove to Metropolis with half rectangle triangles. Our latest adventure takes us to the Eastern Sierra with flying geese blocks!

Kona fabrics: Terracotta, Salmon, Everglade, Seafoam, Lt Parfait, Grizzly, Lingerie, Cantaloupe

While designing this final pattern for the series, it was important for me to come up with an option for quilters who enjoy sewing curves and for those who don’t. Plus, I tend to be indecisive on choosing just one design from my sketches, so in true XOXSEW fashion, there are multiple design options packed into this pattern!

From Left to Right:
1) Road Design without sun. Fabrics: various prints from Art Gallery Fabrics, Birch Fabrics, Dear Stella, and FIGO Fabrics
2) Road Design with sun. Fabrics: prints from Stellar collection by Ruby Star Society, Essex Linen Peach and Essex Metallic Water
3) River Design with sun: Fabrics: Kona Otter, Leather, Cobblestone, Putty, Sky, Shark, Windsor, Yarrow

Travel is our favorite family activity. It’s THE thing we carefully plan, save and spend our money on - we were supposed to be in Vancouver/Alaska this very moment! - so I’m really enjoying this choose-your-own-adventure feeling of this pattern. As soon as it feels safe for us to travel again, you can bet your bottom dollar that our bags would be packed in a flash. In the meantime, I’ll be making another Eastern Sierra quilt! It’s super easy and quick to make so what are you waiting for? Grab the pattern because your new adventure awaits!

Pattern Tester Versions

Once again, I was lucky to have some of the best makers out there test Eastern Sierra! Seeing other people’s versions continues to be one of my favorite parts of pattern writing so please check them out and give them a follow on Instagram!

About the Golden State Series

The Golden State series is a California-inspired collection of four original quilt patterns thoughtfully designed to highlight a quilt block technique.

Gosh, that was wordy. Traveling in California these past few years has been my main inspiration to design and write my first few patterns. Everywhere I went, my first thought was, “THAT’S A QUILT PATTERN!”

During the design process, I wanted to tie each place I visited to a particular quilt block. However, that also meant writing the pattern and doing all the math very differently each time, too! I can’t emphasize how challenging it was at times but I think it’s one of the reasons why I know I will always hold this pattern series close to my heart. It was such a great way for me to stay rejuvenated in the sewing space — designing, writing, testing, piecing, math’ing - oh, the math - a cohesive but diverse set of quilt patterns. A lot like California. ;)
