INSIDE THE PATTERN

The pattern may look complex but if you’re familiar with XOXSEW patterns, it was thoughtfully designed so it’s easy to piece while also flexing your sewing skills. 💪🏻

I have a tendency to use different basic block techniques when designing patterns and you can add Golden Canyon to that list! In this pattern, you’ll be making a fun mix of HSTs, HRTs, and a few quarter circle blocks to create the sun/moon. If you’re new to quilting, expect clear instructions accompanied with lots of diagrams. New and improved instructions to trim your HRTs are also included to ensure your points are nice and sharp. Need even more visual aids? Hyperlinks to video tutorials are in the pattern so you can confidently whip up a top in no time!

Although the pattern is great for confident beginners, the wall hanging/baby sizes may be more suitable for advanced beginners for the sole reason of the smaller curved blocks, which tend to be a little more cumbersome to sew.

SAMPLES + FABRIC COLORS

The colors below were inspired by the colors we saw along the Golden Canyon hiking trail. The colorful rock formations were a sight to behold, especially during sunrise. I didn’t take too many pictures along the way because the camera just did not do it justice. Also, I want to take a brief moment to mention that I had plants in this photo but someone (it’s me) forgot to water them all month and they did not look ready for their glamour shots. 🙈

My lower back is happy to announce that these time-consuming narrow 1/4” quilting were done by the superb Trace Creek Quilting.

Colors: kona mushroom, saffron, lt. parfait, ivory yarrow; essex charcoal; rk brussels pink clay

If you’d like to make a similar colorway, Louisa’s Etsy shop carries kits of a similar palette using AGF PURE Solids!

I wanted to make a sample that showcased a night sky so I went with one of my favorite color combos for this one. Green and grey. Aren’t these colors soothing? *sigh*

Once again, Trace Creek Quilting quilted this one using the Chevron Tumblers panto. Look at that yummy texture!

Colors: kona pesto, leaf, celadon, seafoam, desert green, bone (not shown); andover kaleidoscope

The first samples I made are these two wall hangings using two PURE Solids FQ bundles courtesy of Art Gallery Fabrics. The Crystallizing and Hibernating bundles were the perfect colors for this project. They were a dream to work with and best of all, you can make two wall hangings with one bundle (you’ll need 1/2 yd for the sky but that’s easily solved by making the sky two-toned 😉)! If you need a tip on where to grab these bundles, one of my favorite local shops - Sewing Arts - carries them! They also carry kits for these two versions or make-your-own-bundle HERE!

Finally, I used the Pixel collection by Rashida Coleman-Hale courtesy of Ruby Star Society. Subtle prints are a staple in my fabric stash and I cannot wait to stock up on the other colors for this collection. They’re a must-have.

Fun-for-me fact: Didn’t realize I haven’t finished this quilt until it was time to take these photos. What color should I use for the binding? 🤔

Colors: rss pixel saddle, earth, cactus, tangerine dream, peach, natural

BEHIND THE SCENES

This design was inspired by a family trip to the Death Valley in early 2021. It was the first time we rented an RV and the first time we realized how car sickness can manifest when you’re riding in the back with side-facing seats! 🤪

There was a 20-25 degree temperature jump from the start of our early morning hike to mid-morning so wearing layers was a good call. There was very little shade and zero access to water but nevertheless, it didn’t dampen how incredible it was to see the layers of color we saw along the way. The following morning, we watched the sunrise from the other side at Zabriskie Point. I actually missed the sun riiiight when it peeked from the mountains because I went back to the RV to grab some tissues (darn you allergies!!). But wow, and may I say again, wow, watching the sunlight slowly blanket the canyon was incredible. There was a bit of a crowd on top of the hill but it was pretty quiet because we were all just watching the colors unfold. Once again, it was hard to capture the view on my camera but that’s okay. That only means we’ll have to come back again.
