Alternate Grid Work Project for MQG

Modern Quilt Guild’s 2025 Member Education Program kicked off this month and I’m the first of four in the series! The video uncovers the whats and hows of alternate grid work. While there are multiple techniques to achieve the alternate grid concept, the video focuses on three modern quilt elements. I think narrowing it to three achievable techniques is the most effective way to practice alternate grid work into your own project.

BEHIND THE SCENES

MQG reached out to me last year to see if I'd be interested in sharing my knowledge about alternate grid work for their 2025 education series. I remember looking around, genuinely convinced they emailed the wrong person. I mean, what even is an alternate grid?!

Long story short, it turns out I've been using alternate grid work for my designs all along — I just never knew it had a name!

Needless to say, this was a challenging project for me to take on. Alternate grid work is not a household name in the quilting world, and there aren't many books or articles about it. In fact, I could only find a handful of helpful information on the web. If you're interested in learning more, a list of sources I used for this project are provided at the end of the video.

Overall, it was a great experience to put this all together. The team at MQG were wonderful to work with and despite some difficulties (I never realized how frequently planes flew over our area until I recorded the audio lol), I’m really happy I was a part of this series. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you check it out!
